The world's most iconic trek. Stand at Everest Base Camp (5,364m) beneath the Khumbu Icefall and witness sunrise over Mt. Everest from Kala Patthar (5,555m). 15-day classic Sherpa heartland journey.
The Everest Base Camp trek is the most iconic walking journey on Earth. Over 15 days, you will follow in the footsteps of legendary mountaineers, trekking deep into the heart of the Khumbu Valley. Your expedition weaves through the vibrant Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, ancient Buddhist monasteries like Tengboche, and high-altitude alpine deserts framed by the world's most spectacular peaks, including Ama Dablam and Lhotse. The journey culminates as you navigate the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to stand at Everest Base Camp (5,364m), directly beneath the terrifying Khumbu Icefall. The absolute visual climax follows the next morning with a pre-dawn climb of Kala Patthar (5,555m) to witness the sunrise illuminating the summit of Mt. Everest in brilliant gold.
Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your gear, finalize your permits, and ensure you are completely prepared for the trail ahead.
You will wake early for the thrilling flight to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. (Note: During peak trekking seasons, flights are diverted to Manthali airport, requiring a scenic early morning or overnight drive from Kathmandu.) Upon landing, your foot journey officially begins. You will trek at a gentle pace for 3 to 4 hours, descending toward the Dudh Kosi river. Passing beautiful mani walls and prayer wheels, you will arrive at the peaceful riverside village of Phakding to rest.
Today presents your first great physical milestone. You will hike through beautiful pine forests, crossing the Dudh Kosi river multiple times via soaring suspension bridges—including the famous, dizzyingly high Hillary Suspension Bridge. From there, you will tackle a steep, relentless two-hour climb. Halfway up, if the weather is clear, you will catch your very first, tantalizing glimpse of Mt. Everest before arriving in the vibrant, horseshoe-shaped Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar.
To ensure your body adapts smoothly to the altitude, today is a mandatory active rest day. You will take a stunning 2-to-3-hour hike up to the Everest View Hotel or the Sherpa Culture Museum. This short climb exposes your lungs to thinner air while rewarding you with sweeping, panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You will spend the afternoon relaxing in Namche's bakeries and cafes.
You will leave Namche on a relatively flat, incredibly scenic trail high above the river, offering continuous views of the Himalayan giants. After dropping down to the river at Phunki Tenga for lunch, you will face a steep, sweaty 2-hour ascent through dense rhododendron forests. Reaching the top, you will arrive at Tengboche, home to the largest and most famous Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Ama Dablam.
Your trek today drops down through a birch and conifer forest before crossing the Imja Khola river. As you climb higher, you will watch the tree line completely vanish, replaced by stark alpine scrub and expansive tundra. You are now entering the high alpine desert. The trail opens up into the Imja Valley, bringing you to the sprawling, stone-walled settlement of Dingboche.
You will take your second critical acclimatization day here to guarantee your safety for the final push. You will embark on a steep, 2-to-3-hour hike up the ridge toward Nangkartshang Peak. The air is noticeably thin here, but pushing your elevation today ensures you sleep soundly tonight. You will return to the teahouse to hydrate and rest by the dining room stove.
The environment becomes increasingly harsh and spectacular. You will trek along the valley floor to the tiny settlement of Thukla before tackling the steep, demanding Thukla Pass. At the top of the pass, you will walk through a deeply moving memorial ground dedicated to climbers who lost their lives on Everest. From here, you follow the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, arriving at the freezing, wind-battered outpost of Lobuche.
The ultimate goal. You will start early, navigating the rocky, undulating moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to reach Gorakshep, the last outpost of civilization. After dropping your heavy gear, you will push forward for another 2 hours along the edge of the ice. Arriving at Everest Base Camp, you will stand among the expedition tents directly beneath the terrifying, towering seracs of the Khumbu Icefall. After celebrating your massive achievement, you will hike back to Gorakshep to sleep.
You will wake hours before dawn for the most physically demanding climb of the trek. Braving sub-zero temperatures, you will slowly ascend the steep, rocky slopes of Kala Patthar. Reaching the 5,555m summit just as the sun rises, you will be rewarded with the absolute best, unobstructed view of Mt. Everest glowing in the morning light. After taking in the staggering panorama, you will descend back to Gorakshep for breakfast, and then make a massive, oxygen-rich plunge all the way down the valley to the warmer village of Pheriche.
Your retreat from the extreme altitude accelerates today. You will retrace your steps back down the valley, losing thousands of feet of elevation. The return of thick, oxygen-rich air and the vibrant green tree line will provide you with an incredible surge of physical energy. You will pass back through Tengboche before arriving in Namche Bazaar to celebrate your success with a hot shower and a visit to a local bakery.
You will hike your final miles today. The 6-to-7-hour trail drops steeply down the Namche hill and crosses the suspension bridges one last time. You will walk through the familiar pine forests, soaking in your final moments in the Himalayas. Re-entering Lukla, your trekking boots finally come off! You will celebrate the success of your expedition with your guide and porter team in the vibrant teahouses.
You will board a Twin Otter aircraft for the thrilling flight off the side of the mountain. (Note: If peak season diversions are in effect, you will fly to Manthali and drive back to the city.) Leaving the Himalayas behind, you will return to Kathmandu, transferring to your hotel to relax and reflect on the journey.
This day serves as a vital safety net for potential weather cancellations at the notorious Lukla airport. Because your expedition ran perfectly on schedule, you now get to enjoy a full rest day in Kathmandu to recover, explore the ancient temples, and enjoy a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team.
Your epic 15-day journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home having stood at the foot of the highest mountain on Earth.
