Description

The Langtang Valley trek, culminating in the grueling ascent of Tsergo Ri, is a profound physical and emotional journey into the "Valley of Glaciers." Located just north of Kathmandu, this 10-day expedition takes you through the deeply protected Langtang National Park. You will ascend from lush, subtropical river gorges teeming with wildlife into dense forests of rhododendron and pine, eventually breaking out into the stark, breathtaking high alpine. You will pass through the rebuilt Langtang Village—a testament to the incredible resilience of the Tamang people and communities of Tibetan origin following the 2015 earthquake—before reaching the spiritual hub of Kyanjin Gompa. The absolute physical climax of your expedition is the demanding, high-altitude summit of Tsergo Ri (5,033m). Standing on this rocky peak, you are rewarded with an unmatched, 360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and the massive Tibetan peak of Shishapangma, before making a rapid, triumphant descent back to civilization.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your cold-weather gear, finalize your Langtang National Park permits, and ensure your daypack is dialed in for the trail ahead.

2

Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

You will board a rugged jeep or local bus early in the morning, leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind. The winding drive takes you northwest, weaving through picturesque terraced hillsides, rural farming communities, and deep river gorges. The road can be incredibly bumpy, dusty, and dramatic as it hugs the cliff edges. By late afternoon, you will arrive at the bustling riverside trailhead town of Syabrubesi, where you will check into your teahouse and rest your legs before the foot journey begins.

3

Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel

Your trek officially begins with a challenging, relentless ascent. Leaving the roadhead, you will cross the Bhote Koshi River on a suspension bridge and plunge directly into the dense, ancient forests lining the Langtang Khola. The trail climbs steeply and continuously over rocky steps and tree roots. The canopy provides deep shade, and if you are quiet, you may spot troops of Langur monkeys swinging through the branches. Sweating through the humid microclimate, you will eventually reach the forested clearing of Lama Hotel, a cluster of teahouses tucked into the trees.

4

Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

As you push higher up the gorge today, you will witness a dramatic transition. The dense, subtropical jungle gradually thins out, replaced by alpine pine and scrub. The steep gorge walls finally begin to pull back, opening up into a massive, sweeping U-shaped glacial valley. You will pass through Ghoda Tabela (Horse Stable) and soon encounter the sprawling, rocky debris field of the 2015 landslide. Walking past the moving memorial mani walls, you will arrive at the newly rebuilt Langtang Village. Spending the evening here offers a profound cultural experience as you witness the resilience and warmth of the local Tamang and Tibetan-descended communities.

5

Acclimatization / Exploration Day at Langtang Village

To ensure your body adapts smoothly to the thinning oxygen, today is a mandatory active rest day. Rather than pushing immediately to the highest lodges, you will take a short, spectacular hike up the ridges flanking the village or explore the ancient stone-walled pastures. This short climb exposes your lungs to thinner air while rewarding you with sweeping, panoramic views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m) towering directly above the village. You will spend the afternoon relaxing and hydrating at your teahouse.

6

Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa

Today is a beautifully short, scenic trek that leaves the tree line entirely behind. You will walk through expansive, windswept yak pastures, passing the largest mani wall in Nepal, covered in intricately carved Buddhist prayers. The valley opens up completely as you approach the spiritual hub of Kyanjin Gompa. After checking into your lodge, you have the entire afternoon to explore the ancient monastery, visit the famous government-run yak cheese factory, or hike up to the terminal moraine of the nearby Langtang Lirung glacier to watch the ice cascading down the mountain face.

7

Hike to Tsergo Ri and return to Kyanjin Gompa

The absolute physical climax of your expedition. You will wake before dawn for a grueling, serious high-altitude ascent. The climb up Tsergo Ri is not a casual walk; it is a steep, demanding slog over rocky, exposed terrain, and often requires navigating through packed snow. The air is exceptionally thin, making every step a monumental effort. Reaching the 5,033m summit, you are rewarded with what is widely considered the greatest view in the Langtang region: a staggering 360-degree panorama of Himalayan giants, including Shishapangma (8,027m) across the Tibetan border. After celebrating your massive achievement, you face a long, knee-jarring descent all the way back to the safety and thicker air of Kyanjin Gompa.

8

Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

Your retreat from the extreme altitude begins today. Because going downhill demands much less cardiovascular effort, you will cover a massive amount of ground. Retracing your steps back down the valley, you will pass through Langtang Village and rapidly lose elevation. The sudden return of thick, oxygen-rich air and the fragrant pine forests will provide you with a huge surge of physical energy and warmth. You will plunge back into the dense gorge, arriving at Lama Hotel for a deeply comfortable, warmer night of sleep.

9

Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi & Drive to Kathmandu

Prepare yourself for an incredibly long, 12-to-15-hour marathon day of travel. You will start trekking very early in the morning, making a rapid, continuous 5-to-6-hour descent through the subtropical forests back to the trailhead at Syabrubesi. Your trekking boots finally come off! After a quick lunch, you will immediately board your vehicle for the 7-to-9-hour bumpy, winding drive out of the mountains. Arriving back in the sensory overload of Kathmandu late in the evening, you will transfer to your hotel for a desperately needed, luxurious hot shower.

10

Departure from Kathmandu

Your epic 10-day journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend the morning shopping for last-minute souvenirs in Thamel or enjoying a final Nepalese coffee. You will then be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the triumph of conquering Tsergo Ri.
