The perfect short Himalayan trek. 10-day Ghorepani Poon Hill trek offers spectacular sunrise views over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Ideal for beginners and families with moderate fitness levels.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is the crown jewel of short-duration Himalayan trekking. Over 10 perfectly paced days, you will bypass extreme high-altitude risks while still being rewarded with some of the most spectacular, unobstructed mountain panoramas on Earth. Your journey plunges into the lush, subtropical foothills of the Annapurna Massif, navigating terraced agricultural slopes, roaring river gorges, and ancient, towering rhododendron forests. You will tackle the infamous Ulleri stone staircases to earn your elevation, immersing yourself in the rich, preserved heritage of the local Gurung and Magar communities. The absolute visual climax of your trek requires a freezing, pre-dawn ascent to the summit of Poon Hill (3,210m). As the sun breaks over the horizon, you will witness the jagged, ice-fluted faces of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machapuchare (Fishtail) erupt in brilliant gold. After absorbing the staggering scale of the high Himalayas, you will descend through the beautiful slate-roofed village of Ghandruk before retreating to the luxurious lakeside tranquility of Pokhara.
Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your trekking gear, finalize your ACAP permits, and ensure you are perfectly prepared for the lush trails ahead.
You will board a private vehicle early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive is an adventure in itself, taking you along the paved Prithvi Highway and following the winding curves of the Trishuli River. The climate is warm and subtropical as you weave through vibrant terraced hillsides and rural farming communities. Bypassing a stop in Pokhara, you will drive directly to the bustling road-head town of Nayapul, checking into a local teahouse so you are positioned right at the trailhead for tomorrow morning.
Your foot journey officially begins today. Shouldering your daypack, you will begin hiking along the banks of the Bhurungdi Khola river. The air is warm and deeply humid as you walk through vibrant bamboo forests and cross suspension bridges at Birethanti. Passing the village of Tikhedhunga, you will face your first major physical test: the infamous Ulleri stairs. This is a relentless, punishing climb of over 3,200 steep stone steps. Sweating heavily, you will eventually break through the steep terraces to arrive at the Magar settlement of Ulleri, rewarded with your first teasing views of Annapurna South.
Leaving the agricultural terraces behind, you will plunge into a massive, ancient forest of oak and rhododendron. The trail undulates gently upward alongside small streams and cascading waterfalls. The air cools noticeably as you gain altitude, providing a massive surge of physical relief from yesterday's humidity. You will arrive early at the blue-roofed teahouses of Ghorepani, perched high on a ridge. The evening offers spectacular views of the Dhaulagiri range glowing in the sunset.
The absolute climax of your trek. You will wake over an hour before dawn, strapping on your headlamp to tackle the steep, 45-minute climb up to the viewpoint at Poon Hill (3,210m). As the sun breaks over the horizon, you will be rewarded with a mind-blowing, unobstructed, 360-degree panorama of the high Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri I (8,167m) and the Annapurna Massif. After taking incredible photographs and sipping hot tea at the summit, you will make the easy descent back down to Ghorepani. Because this itinerary is brilliantly paced to prioritize your enjoyment, you get to spend the rest of the day relaxing by the teahouse stove, reading, and recovering, rather than rushing to pack your bags.
You will bid farewell to Ghorepani and immediately tackle a steep, challenging climb up to the Deurali Pass, which offers another phenomenal perspective of the Annapurna range. From the pass, the trail plunges violently downward into a deep, moss-draped gorge. You will navigate slippery, root-covered paths through thick pine forests, cross a roaring stream, and tackle one final, deeply fatiguing ascent to reach Tadapani. This tiny, ridge-top settlement is completely engulfed by the dense jungle and offers spectacular, up-close views of Machapuchare.
Your retreat from the higher elevations begins in earnest today. The trail is almost entirely downhill, dropping rapidly through the thick, shaded canopy of the old-growth forest. The sudden return of thick, oxygen-rich air will make the hiking feel effortless. Breaking out of the tree line, you will arrive at the sprawling, beautifully preserved village of Ghandruk. Famous for its traditional slate-roofed houses and rich Gurung culture, you will spend the afternoon exploring the narrow alleyways and visiting the local cultural museum, all while Annapurna South towers directly above the village.
Your final hours on the trail. You will plunge rapidly down from Ghandruk via a massive network of stone staircases, dropping all the way to the floor of the Modi Khola river valley. The air becomes intensely warm and humid as you hike along the undulating, subtropical paths, passing through the village of Birethanti. Crossing the final suspension bridge, you will arrive back at the road-head in Nayapul. Your trekking boots finally come off! You will board a private vehicle for the short, 1.5-hour drive to Pokhara, checking into your hotel for a long, luxurious shower and a celebratory dinner by the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake.
You will make the final journey back to the capital. Whether you opt for a spectacular 25-minute domestic flight past the Manaslu range or the winding, scenic drive along the Prithvi Highway, you will arrive back in the sensory overload of Kathmandu by the afternoon. The evening is yours to shop for final souvenirs in Thamel, enjoy a Nepalese coffee, and share a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team to celebrate your success.
Your epic 10-day journey into the Annapurna foothills comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the iconic imagery of the Poon Hill sunrise burned into your memory.
