The ultimate Khumbu circuit. Visit emerald Gokyo Lakes, cross Cho La Pass (5,420m), stand at Everest Base Camp, and witness sunrise from Kala Patthar (5,555m). Escape the crowds on this spectacular loop.
The Everest Gokyo Trek is the ultimate Khumbu circuit, designed for trekkers who want to experience the iconic Everest Base Camp while escaping the crowded main trails. Over 18 days, you will veer off the standard path and ascend the pristine, tranquil Gokyo Valley. You will walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier—the longest glacier in the Himalayas—before arriving at the breathtaking, emerald-blue Gokyo Lakes. The expedition demands immense physical endurance as you conquer two of the region's greatest viewpoints, Gokyo Ri (5,357m) and Kala Patthar (5,555m), and navigate the steep, icy traverse of the infamous Cho La Pass (5,420m). After surviving the high-altitude glacial crossing, you will merge onto the classic trail, standing triumphantly at Everest Base Camp before descending through the legendary Sherpa heartlands.
Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your gear—paying special attention to your micro-spikes for the Cho La Pass—finalize your permits, and ensure you are completely prepared for the trail ahead.
You will wake early for the thrilling flight to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. (Note: During peak trekking seasons, flights are diverted to Manthali airport, requiring a scenic early morning or overnight drive from Kathmandu.) Upon landing, your foot journey officially begins. You will trek at a gentle pace for 3 to 4 hours, descending toward the Dudh Kosi river, passing beautiful mani walls and prayer wheels until you arrive at the peaceful riverside village of Phakding.
Today presents your first great physical milestone. You will hike through beautiful pine forests, crossing the Dudh Kosi river multiple times via soaring suspension bridges. After crossing the dizzyingly high Hillary Suspension Bridge, you will tackle a steep, relentless two-hour climb. Halfway up, you will catch your very first glimpse of Mt. Everest before arriving in the vibrant, horseshoe-shaped Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar.
To ensure your body adapts smoothly to the altitude, today is a mandatory active rest day. You will take a stunning 2-to-3-hour hike up to the Everest View Hotel. This short climb exposes your lungs to thinner air while rewarding you with sweeping, panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You will spend the afternoon relaxing and carb-loading in Namche's bakeries.
You will leave the busy Everest Base Camp trail behind today, branching off higher into the quiet, pristine Gokyo Valley. You will climb steeply out of Namche to the Mong La pass, offering spectacular views of Mt. Khumbila. Dropping down to the Dudh Kosi river, you will then push through rhododendron and birch forests, keeping an eye out for musk deer, before reaching the small settlement of Dole.
As you push higher, the tree line completely vanishes, replaced by stark alpine scrub. The trail climbs steadily along the side of the valley, high above the river. You will enjoy unobstructed views of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, dominating the skyline ahead. You will arrive at Machhermo by early afternoon to rest and hydrate.
Because you have rapidly gained elevation over the last two days, you will take a crucial second acclimatization day here. You will hike up the ridge directly above the village, exposing your body to the 4,700m altitude to ensure you are perfectly prepared for the high lakes tomorrow, adhering strictly to the "climb high, sleep low" rule.
The landscape transforms into a dramatic, high-alpine desert. You will climb the terminal moraine of the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. Trekking through the rocky, lunar landscape, you will suddenly encounter the first of the Gokyo Lakes. As you push forward, the valley opens up to reveal the second and finally the third lake (Dudh Pokhari), its shimmering emerald waters set directly beside the teahouses of Gokyo village.
You will wake before dawn to tackle the steep, lung-busting climb up Gokyo Ri. Reaching the 5,357m summit, you are rewarded with what many consider the greatest view in the Himalayas: a massive panorama featuring Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, with the Ngozumpa Glacier sprawling below. After descending to Gokyo for breakfast, you will cross the chaotic, boulder-strewn glacier itself, arriving at the tiny staging outpost of Thagnak.
You have reached the physical and technical crux of the expedition. You will start early for a grueling, steep ascent up boulder fields toward the Cho La Pass. The top of the pass requires navigating a permanent, icy glacier, often requiring the use of micro-spikes. After conquering the 5,420m saddle, you face a steep, knee-jarring descent down rock faces, eventually flattening out as you limp into the majestic valley of Dzongla, directly beneath the sheer face of Cholatse.
After yesterday's massive effort, today offers a shorter, highly scenic recovery walk. You will trek along an undulating trail high above the valley floor, enjoying brilliant views of Ama Dablam. You will merge back onto the main Everest Base Camp trail, joining the flow of trekkers as you arrive at the freezing, wind-battered outpost of Lobuche.
The ultimate goal. You will start early, navigating the rocky, undulating moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to reach Gorakshep. After dropping your heavy gear, you will push forward along the edge of the ice. Arriving at Everest Base Camp, you will stand among the expedition tents directly beneath the terrifying Khumbu Icefall. After celebrating your achievement, you will hike back to Gorakshep to sleep.
You will wake hours before dawn for your final high-altitude challenge. Braving sub-zero temperatures, you will slowly ascend the steep slopes of Kala Patthar. Reaching the 5,555m summit at sunrise, you will get the absolute best, unobstructed view of Mt. Everest glowing in the morning light. After taking in the panorama, you will descend back to Gorakshep, pack your bags, and make a massive, oxygen-rich plunge all the way down the valley to the warmer village of Pheriche.
Your retreat from the extreme altitude accelerates today. You will retrace your steps back down the valley, losing thousands of feet of elevation. The return of thick, oxygen-rich air and the vibrant green tree line will provide you with an incredible surge of physical energy. You will pass back through Tengboche before arriving in Namche Bazaar to celebrate your success with a hot shower.
You will hike your final miles today. The 6-to-7-hour trail drops steeply down the Namche hill and crosses the suspension bridges one last time. You will walk through the familiar pine forests, soaking in your final moments in the Himalayas. Re-entering Lukla, your trekking boots finally come off! You will celebrate the success of your expedition with your guide and porter team.
You will board a Twin Otter aircraft for the thrilling flight off the side of the mountain. (Note: If peak season diversions are in effect, you will fly to Manthali and drive back to the city.) Leaving the Himalayas behind, you will return to Kathmandu, transferring to your hotel to relax and reflect on the journey.
This day serves as a vital safety net for potential weather cancellations at the notorious Lukla airport. Because your expedition ran perfectly on schedule, you now get to enjoy a full rest day in Kathmandu to recover, explore the ancient temples, and enjoy a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team.
Your epic 18-day journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home having conquered both the Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp.
Note: This itinerary involves crossing the high-altitude Cho La Pass. Pass crossings are subject to snow and ice conditions. The guide reserves the right to alter the route for safety. Please allow 1-2 buffer days for potential Lukla flight delays.
