Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

The ultimate test of endurance and one of the most rewarding wilderness expeditions in the Himalayas. Complete circuit taking in North Base Camp (Pang Pema, 5,150m) and South Base Camp (Oktang) via the grueling Sele-Le pass sequence.

Description

The complete Kanchenjunga Circuit is the ultimate test of endurance and one of the most rewarding wilderness expeditions in the Himalayas. Over 24 days, you will carve a massive loop through the remote far-eastern reaches of Nepal, taking in the sheer diversity of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. You will approach through lush, sub-tropical cardamom forests and isolated Tibetan-influenced villages, first conquering the North Base Camp (Pang Pema, 5,150m) to witness the terrifying North Face. The true crux of your circuit then begins as you traverse the grueling Sele-Le pass sequence to cross over into the Yalung Valley. Here, you will reach the South Base Camp (Oktang) for a completely different, sun-drenched perspective of the Kanchenjunga massif before descending through ancient rhododendron forests back to civilization.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your expedition begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in the lively Thamel district. Your evening is dedicated to an official trekking briefing with your lead guide, where you will undergo a rigorous gear check and finalize your Restricted Area Permits and safety protocols.

2

Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Flight) & Drive to Ilam (1,200m)

You will catch an early 45-minute domestic flight to the sweltering plains of Bhadrapur. From the lowlands, you will immediately board rugged 4x4 jeeps and drive upward through rolling hills, leaving the heat behind. You will wind through the famous, emerald-green tea estates and gentle valleys of Ilam, settling into a local guesthouse to experience lowland Nepali hill-tribe culture for your first night in the east.

3

Ilam to Taplejung (1,450m)

You will continue your road journey deeper into the mountains today. The winding drive takes you through lush, terraced agricultural hillsides and vibrant local communities until you reach the bustling administrative hub of Taplejung. This marks the end of your driving and serves as the official starting point for your foot expedition.

4

Taplejung to Chirwa & Lelep (1,950m)

Your first official day on the trail introduces you to the humid, sub-tropical lower Kanchenjunga region. You will trek downward into the gorge alongside the raging, milky waters of the Tamor River. Navigating through dense flora, cardamom farms, and vibrant Limbu villages, you will pass the riverside market of Chirwa and push further up the valley to settle in the large settlement of Lelep.

5

Lelep to Amjilosa (2,030m)

Today the canyon begins to narrow, and the physical demands on your body increase. Leaving the main river, you will plunge into thick, ancient forests of oak and bamboo. You will navigate steep stone staircases, cross sturdy suspension bridges, and pass towering waterfalls before arriving at Amjilosa, a tiny, isolated Tibetan settlement perched precariously on a steep ridge.

6

Amjilosa to Gyabla (2,780m)

Continuing through the deep, forested gorge, you will gain significant elevation today. The trail consists of relentless climbs and descents on rough, rocky paths cut directly into the side of the mountain. You will finally notice the stifling humidity break, replaced by much cooler, crisper mountain air as you reach the small, traditional village of Gyabla.

7

Gyabla to Ghunsa (3,427m)

This is a magnificent transition day where you will watch the landscape completely shift from the sub-tropical gorge to the true high alpine. Your trail meanders through stunning larch and pine forests, passing ancient mani stones and chortens. You will arrive at Ghunsa, a major Sherpa settlement characterized by wooden houses and snapping prayer flags, where you will sleep for the next two nights.

8

Rest / Acclimatization Day at Ghunsa

Today is a mandatory rest day to allow your body to adapt to the thinning oxygen. Adhering to the golden rule of "climb high, sleep low," you will take a short acclimatization hike up the steep ridges flanking the village or visit the local monastery. This vital active rest prepares your lungs for the glacial terrain ahead.

9

Ghunsa to Khambachen (4,100m)

Leaving the tree line entirely behind, you will enter a harsh, rocky, and utterly spectacular glacial environment. Your trek requires careful footing over landslide-prone scree slopes beside the roaring glacial river. The defining feature of your day is the terrifyingly sheer North Face of Mt. Jannu (7,710m) dominating the skyline as you approach the seasonal settlement of Khambachen.

10

Acclimatization / Day hike to Jannu Base Camp viewpoint (Approx. 4,300-4,400m) & return to Khambachen

You will take a critical second acclimatization day here to prepare for the extreme altitude of Pang Pema. You will embark on a spectacular day hike toward the Jannu Base Camp viewpoint. Navigating through icy streams and rocky moraines, you will be rewarded with dramatic vistas of Mount Jannu and its surrounding glaciers before returning to your teahouse in Khambachen to rest and hydrate.

11

Khambachen to Lhonak (4,780m)

The air is now exceptionally thin, making today's trek deeply fatiguing. Your route traverses high, exposed pastures and the lateral moraine of the massive Kanchenjunga Glacier. You will likely spot herds of Blue Sheep (Bharal) navigating the impossible cliffs above. Lhonak is a bleak, wind-battered cluster of stone huts, but the 360-degree panorama of jagged, 7,000m+ peaks makes the bitter cold entirely worth it.

12

Lhonak to Pang Pema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp) & Return to Lhonak

Today is the absolute climax of your northern route. You will start at dawn for a grueling round trip, navigating highly unstable, shifting glacial moraines. Arriving at Pang Pema (North Base Camp), you will sit amongst the boulders and look directly up at the colossal, incredibly steep North Face of Kanchenjunga. The deep rumble of distant avalanches will provide a constant soundtrack before you retreat back to the safety of Lhonak.

13

Lhonak to Khambachen (4,100m)

Your retreat from the extreme altitude of the north begins with a rapid descent. You will retrace your steps back down the lateral moraine and rocky trails. As you drop in elevation, the return of slightly thicker air will provide you with an immediate and immense surge of physical energy and warmth as you settle back into Khambachen.

14

Khambachen to Ghunsa (3,427m)

You will continue your descent today, leaving the glacial rock behind and joyfully re-entering the alpine tree line. Walking back through the beautiful larch and pine forests, you will arrive back in the relative luxury and rich oxygen of Ghunsa to rest and prepare for the southern traverse.

15

Ghunsa to Sele-Le Base (4,200m)

Your expedition now pivots south, leaving the main valley for a steep, relentless ascent. The trail climbs sharply over alpine ridges, taking you away from the river and up into a secluded alpine bowl. You will set up in a basic teahouse at Sele-Le Base, staging yourself perfectly for tomorrow's massive high-pass crossing.

16

Cross Sele-Le Pass (4,390m) to Cheram (3,100m)

You have reached the physical crux of the circuit. This brutal day requires you to conquer the high, lung-busting altitude of the Sele-Le Pass. The physical toll on your body is immense, but you are rewarded with a mind-bending horizon that looks out over the Yalung valley and neighboring giants. Your day ends with a massive, knee-jarring descent all the way down to the tree-lined settlement of Cheram.

17

Day trip to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (Oktang) & return to Ramche (3,500m)

Today brings an awe-inspiring push up the ablation valley of the mighty Yalung Glacier. You will hike past frozen alpine lakes to the Oktang viewpoint, the traditional South Base Camp. From here, the sprawling, brilliant white South-West face of Kanchenjunga towers directly above you. After taking in the completely different southern perspective, you will drop back down to sleep at Ramche.

18

Ramche to Torongding (3,100m)

Your final retreat from the high alpine begins. You will watch the environment transform dramatically hour by hour, shifting from rocky, glacial terrain back into vibrant, living forests. You will sharply descend alongside the Simbuwa Khola river, enveloped in towering pines and massive, ancient rhododendron trees until you reach Torongding.

19

Torongding to Yamphudim

Prepare for a punishing day that involves a grueling, sweaty climb over the Lasiya Bhanjyang ridge before a massive, steep descent. Re-entering civilization, you will arrive at Yamphudim, a charming community of Sherpas, Limbus, and Rais. The sight of terraced agriculture marks the end of your time in the deep wilderness.

20

Yamphudim to Kebang (1,450m)

Today offers a much gentler walk characterized by constant, minor ups and downs. You will hike through lush, green valleys, crossing multiple suspension bridges. You will find the air warm, the oxygen plentiful, and the trails bustling with local villagers going about their agricultural routines as you arrive in Kebang.

21

Kebang to Ilam

Your foot journey finally comes to an end today. After making the final push to the road-head, you can finally take your trekking boots off for good. You will board jeeps for a long, winding drive out of the hills, returning to the beautiful, rolling tea estates of Ilam to celebrate the end of the trek.

22

Ilam to Bhadrapur to Kathmandu

You will complete the final drive down to the sweltering plains of Bhadrapur, where you will board your 45-minute flight back to Kathmandu. Watching the Himalayan giants shrink in your airplane window is a surreal experience. Upon arrival, your evening is reserved for long, hot showers, clean clothes, and a massive celebratory farewell dinner.

23

Buffer / Rest day in Kathmandu

This day serves as your vital built-in safety net. It accounts for potential domestic flight cancellations out of Bhadrapur or weather delays when crossing the Sele-Le Pass. Because your expedition ran perfectly on schedule, you now get to enjoy a full leisure day in Kathmandu for sightseeing, souvenir shopping, or getting a much-needed massage.

24

Final Departure

Your epic 24-day circuit comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home having conquered both the North and South base camps of the world's third-highest peak.
