The ultimate crux of your journey is a grueling 10-hour push over the Lumba Sumba Pass, rewarding you with unprecedented, simultaneous panoramas of both the Kanchenjunga and Makalu massifs before descending deep into the lush Arun Valley.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your expedition begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official trekking briefing with your lead guide, where you will undergo a rigorous gear check, focusing heavily on your sub-zero camping equipment, and finalize your Restricted Area Permits.

2

Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Flight) & Drive to Ilam

You will catch an early, approximately 1-hour domestic flight to the sweltering plains of Bhadrapur (93m). From the lowlands, you will immediately board rugged 4x4 jeeps and drive upward through rolling hills, leaving the heat behind. You will wind through the famous, emerald-green tea estates, settling into Ilam for your first night in the east.

3

Ilam/Bhadrapur to Taplejung

You will hunker down for a long, 9-hour drive pushing deeper into the mountains. The winding, bumpy road takes you through lush, terraced agricultural hillsides and vibrant local communities until you reach the bustling administrative hub of Taplejung. This marks the end of your driving and serves as the official starting point for your foot expedition.

4

Taplejung to Chirwa

Your first official day on the trail introduces you to the humid, sub-tropical lower Kanchenjunga region. You will trek downward for approximately 6 hours alongside the raging waters of the Tamor River. Navigating through dense flora and cardamom farms, you will arrive at the riverside market of Chirwa to set up your first camp.

5

Chirwa to Lelep

Today the canyon begins to narrow, and the physical demands on your body increase over a 6-hour trek. You will plunge into thick, ancient forests, navigating steep stone staircases and crossing sturdy suspension bridges. You will pass towering waterfalls before arriving at the large settlement of Lelep.

6

Lelep to Illa Danda

Continuing through the deep, forested gorge for 6 hours, you will gain significant elevation today. The trail consists of relentless climbs on rough, rocky paths cut directly into the side of the mountain. You will finally notice the stifling humidity break, replaced by much cooler mountain air as you arrive at the ridge-top camp of Illa Danda.

7

Illa Danda to Selep Kharka

This is a magnificent 6-hour transition day where you will watch the landscape completely shift from the dense sub-tropical gorge to open alpine pastures. You are now entering the realm of the "Kharkas"—traditional grazing lands. The trail begins to feel incredibly remote and wild, marking your true entry into the wilderness.

8

Selep Kharka to Olangchung Gola

Following the river to its upper reaches, you will trek for 7 hours until you arrive at Olangchung Gola. This is the largest and most historically significant Walung (Tibetan-descended) village in the region. The dark, wooden houses stand as a testament to the ancient salt trade routes with Tibet.

9

Acclimatization Day at Olangchung Gola

Today is a mandatory rest day to allow your body to adapt to the thinning oxygen. You have the entire day to explore the ancient monastery, interact with the local Walung people, and mentally prepare for the total isolation of the high-altitude camping that begins tomorrow.

10

Olangchung Gola to Upper Langmale

Leaving all permanent settlements behind, your expedition becomes entirely self-sufficient. You will trek for 7 hours as the vegetation rapidly thins out to dwarf shrubs and alpine scrub. You will rely completely on your expedition crew for setting up camp and catering in the open, high-altitude pastures of Upper Langmale.

11

Upper Langmale to Lumba Sumba Pass Camp

The air is now exceptionally thin, making this strenuous, 6-hour high-altitude ascent deeply fatiguing. Your route traverses rocky moraines and stark alpine terrain. You will set up camp in a harsh, exposed, sub-zero environment directly beneath the pass, getting to sleep early to prepare for the alpine start.

12

Buffer / Weather Contingency Day

This is your critical built-in safety net. High passes are notoriously unpredictable. This day is specifically reserved to wait out bad weather, heavy snowfall, or simply to ensure you have a safe, clear weather window for the massive pass crossing ahead.

13

Lumba Sumba Pass Camp to Chauri Kharka

The absolute physical crux of your expedition. You will wake before dawn for a grueling, 10-hour day. You will climb the steep, snow-covered scree of the Lumba Sumba Pass (approx. 5,160m). At the summit, you are rewarded with a mind-bending panorama of Kanchenjunga and Makalu. Your day ends with a notoriously steep, icy descent requiring extreme focus to reach the safety of your camp at Chauri Kharka.

14

Chauri Kharka to Thudam

Your retreat from the extreme altitude begins with a punishing 7-hour descent through unmarked, rugged trails into a dense, primordial forest. Dropping heavily in elevation, you will arrive at Thudam, an incredibly isolated, traditional Bhotia village that remains largely disconnected from the outside world.

15

Thudam to Kharka

You will follow turbulent rivers for 6 hours today. The path is often overgrown with dense brush, requiring expert navigational skills from your guides. You will tackle multiple tricky river crossings on simple log bridges, immersing yourself entirely in the raw Makalu-Barun wilderness before setting up camp in a forest clearing.

16

Kharka to Chyamtang

Re-entering civilization, you will notice the environment transforming dramatically over your 6-hour trek. Your trail opens up to terraced agricultural fields and Sherpa/Lhomi settlements. Arriving in Chyamtang marks your official entrance into the Makalu-Barun National Park buffer zone, bringing the comfort of village life back into view.

17

Chyamtang to Hatiya

Today consists of a long, steady 6-hour descent toward the mighty Arun River. As you drop lower, the climate shifts dramatically back to warm and humid. You will walk through vibrant, lush vegetation until you reach Hatiya, a historical entry point for traders entering the Makalu region.

18

Hatiya to Gola

You will trek along the banks of the Arun River for 6 hours. The trail is relatively flat but often hot and sticky, passing through vibrant Rai and Gurung farming villages. The rich cultural shift and plentiful oxygen make for a pleasant, low-altitude walking day.

19

Gola to Hedangna Gadhi

You will enjoy a steady, undulating 7-hour walk up and out of the deeper river gorges. Trekking through agricultural terraces, you will arrive at Hedangna Gadhi, a historic village featuring the ruins of an old fort and expansive views down the Arun Valley.

20

Hedangna Gadhi to Num & Drive to Tumlingtar

Your final day on the trail involves a steep climb out to Num, the major road-head for the region. Here, your trekking boots finally come off! You will board a jeep for an approximately 6-hour, bumpy ride down to Tumlingtar, a bustling town where you will celebrate the end of the expedition with your crew.

21

Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

You will take a scenic, 50-minute morning flight back to the capital. Watching the Himalayan giants shrink in your airplane window is a surreal experience. Your evening in Kathmandu is reserved for long, hot showers, clean clothes, and a massive celebratory farewell dinner.

22

Final Departure from Kathmandu

Your epic 22-day journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with memories of traversing one of the most remote, untamed corridors of the Himalayas.
