The ultimate Langtang traverse linking three regions: Langtang Valley, sacred Gosaikunda lakes, and Helambu. Summit Kyanjin Ri (4,773m), cross Lauribina Pass (4,610m), and complete a full circuit back to Kathmandu.
The Langtang, Gosaikunda, and Helambu Circuit is a masterclass in Himalayan diversity. Over 15 days, you will link three vastly different regions into one continuous, awe-inspiring traverse. Your expedition begins in the "Valley of Glaciers," ascending through dense, subtropical river gorges into the high alpine to witness the resilience of the Tamang and Tibetan-descended communities of Langtang. After summiting the spectacular Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) for panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, you will backtrack and pivot upward into the sacred alpine lake district. Conquering the stark, icy Lauribina Pass (4,610m), you cross the high-altitude divide and descend into the lush, rolling middle-hills of the Helambu region. Walking through ancient Hyolmo villages and the protected forests of Shivapuri National Park, your foot journey brings you right back to the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, completing one of the most fulfilling trekking circuits in Nepal.
Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your cold-weather gear, finalize your multiple National Park permits, and ensure your pack is ready for the long traverse ahead.
You will board a rugged jeep or local bus early in the morning, leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind. The winding drive takes you northwest, weaving through picturesque terraced hillsides, rural farming communities, and deep river gorges. The road can be incredibly bumpy, dusty, and dramatic as it hugs the cliff edges. By late afternoon, you will arrive at the bustling riverside trailhead town of Syabrubesi, checking into your teahouse to rest before the foot journey begins.
Your trek officially begins with a challenging, relentless ascent. Crossing the Bhote Koshi River on a suspension bridge, you will plunge directly into the dense, ancient forests lining the Langtang Khola. The trail climbs steeply and continuously over rocky steps and tree roots. The canopy provides deep shade, and if you are quiet, you may spot troops of Langur monkeys swinging through the branches. Sweating through the humid microclimate, you will eventually reach the forested clearing of Lama Hotel.
As you push higher up the gorge today, you will witness a dramatic transition. The dense, subtropical jungle gradually thins out, replaced by alpine pine and scrub. The steep gorge walls finally begin to pull back, opening up into a massive, sweeping U-shaped glacial valley. You will encounter the sprawling, rocky debris field of the 2015 landslide. Walking past the moving memorial mani walls, you will arrive at the newly rebuilt Langtang Village, witnessing firsthand the incredible resilience of the local Tamang people and communities of Tibetan origin.
Today is a beautifully short, scenic trek that leaves the tree line entirely behind. You will walk through expansive, windswept yak pastures, passing the largest mani wall in Nepal, covered in intricately carved Buddhist prayers. The valley opens up completely as you approach the spiritual hub of Kyanjin Gompa. After checking into your lodge early, you have the entire afternoon to explore the ancient monastery, visit the famous government-run yak cheese factory, or rest your legs.
You will wake early for a serious high-altitude acclimatization hike. The steep, lung-busting climb up Kyanjin Ri is a monumental effort in the thin air, but reaching the 4,773m summit is one of the visual highlights of the expedition. You are rewarded with an unmatched, 360-degree panorama of the Langtang Lirung glacier cascading down the mountain face, surrounded by Dorje Lakpa and snow-capped Tibetan peaks. After absorbing the views, you will descend back to Kyanjin Gompa to rest and rehydrate.
Your retreat from the upper valley begins today. Retracing your steps back down the sweeping glacial valley, you will pass the massive mani walls and yak pastures. Because going downhill demands much less cardiovascular effort, the return of slightly thicker air will provide you with a huge surge of physical energy. You will settle back into Langtang Village for a comfortable evening.
You will continue your rapid descent, plunging back into the dense, forested gorge. Navigating the familiar, steep root-covered paths and dropping out of the alpine zone entirely, the air becomes warmer and heavily oxygenated. You will arrive at Lama Hotel by mid-afternoon, resting by the roaring river.
Instead of dropping all the way back to the roadhead at Syabrubesi, your expedition pivots today. You will branch off the main trail, traversing the steep hillside through thick bamboo and pine forests. You will tackle a sweaty, demanding ridge climb to reach Thulo Syabru, a beautifully preserved, traditional Tamang village perched precariously on a high ridge, offering sweeping views of the Ganesh Himal.
Prepare for a massive, relentless ascent. Leaving the village behind, you will climb a steep, forested ridge that seems to go on forever. You will walk through thick rhododendron canopies, emerging occasionally into small clearings. The air thins noticeably as you pass the 3,000m mark, finally arriving at the quiet teahouses of Cholangpati, where you are treated to spectacular views of Langtang Lirung fading in the evening light.
You will leave the tree line behind once again, entering the stark high alpine. The trail climbs up the barren, windswept ridge of Lauribinayak, offering mind-bending panoramas of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges. Pushing further along a narrow, rocky cliffside trail, the landscape opens up to reveal the magnificent, sacred lakes. Passing Saraswati Kunda and Bhairab Kunda, you will finally arrive at the shores of the massive, turquoise Gosaikunda Lake, settling into a teahouse right on the water's edge.
The physical and technical crux of your circuit. You will wake before dawn and skirt the edges of the frozen lakes, beginning a steep, lung-burning ascent up rocky scree. Reaching the summit of Lauribina Pass (4,610m), you officially cross the high-altitude divide separating Langtang from the Helambu region. What follows is a massive, knee-jarring, and deeply fatiguing descent through rugged, uninhabited terrain, eventually dropping back down into the safety of the tree line to reach the isolated, rocky outpost of Ghopte.
You have conquered the high mountains; today, you enter the lush, rolling middle-hills of Helambu. The trail undulates through beautiful, moss-draped forests of pine and rhododendron. You will hike up and down several smaller ridges, passing the village of Tharepati before making a long descent into Kutumsang, a picturesque village blending Sherpa and Hyolmo cultures.
Your final day on the trail. You will hike through the vibrant, terraced agricultural landscapes of the lower hills, crossing into the protected watershed of the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The trail rolls gently through Tamang villages until you reach the ridge-top settlement of Chisopani. Here, your foot journey officially concludes. You will take a short, 1-hour drive down into the Kathmandu Valley, transferring to your hotel for a desperately needed, luxurious hot shower.
Your epic 15-day Grand Traverse comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend the morning shopping for souvenirs in Thamel or enjoying a final Nepalese coffee. You will then be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the triumph of linking three of Nepal's most spectacular regions.
