Description

Manang & Tilicho Lake Expedition

The Manang to Tilicho Lake hike is a visually staggering and physically demanding expedition into the high-altitude heart of the Annapurna region. Over 12 days, you will bypass the humid lower trekking trails of the Annapurna Circuit by utilizing rugged 4x4 off-road tracks, driving deep into the mountains to begin your foot journey at Chame.

The Highest Lake in the World

Leaving the main circuit behind, you will venture into the stark, wind-scoured, and highly landslide-prone terrain leading to Tilicho Base Camp. The absolute climax of your expedition requires a massive, grueling alpine push to the shores of Tilicho Lake (4,919m)—one of the highest glacial lakes in the world, renowned for its brilliant turquoise waters set against the towering, icy wall of the Grande Barriere.

4x4 Off-Road Adventure

From Chame, you will trek through the spectacular Marsyangdi River valley, passing through ancient Tibetan-influenced villages like Upper Pisang and the bustling high-altitude hub of Manang before attempting the lake.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your cold-weather gear, finalize your ACAP permits, and ensure you are mentally prepared for the rugged off-road driving and the extreme altitude of the lake.

2

Drive Kathmandu to Besisahar (760m)

You will board a private vehicle early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive takes you along the paved Prithvi Highway, following the curves of the Trishuli River. The climate is warm and subtropical as you weave through terraced hillsides and rural farming communities.

3

Drive Besisahar to Chame (2,670m)

You will board a heavy-duty 4x4 jeep for an incredibly visceral, adrenaline-pumping off-road adventure. Bypassing days of lower-elevation trekking, the jeep will crawl up a narrow, cliff-hugging dirt track carved directly into the Marsyangdi gorge. You will drive under massive cascading waterfalls and over rocky, landslide-prone sections. As you gain over 1,900 meters in elevation, the humidity breaks, and the air becomes crisp and cool.

4

Trek Chame to Upper Pisang (3,300m)

Your foot journey officially begins today. You will trek through a steep, narrow valley shrouded in deep pine forests, crossing the roaring Marsyangdi River via a massive suspension bridge. The trail climbs dramatically onto an exposed rock face before leveling out. As you round the bend into the U-shaped upper valley, the massive, curved slab of Paungda Danda rises 1,500 meters directly out of the river.

5

Trek Upper Pisang to Manang (3,540m)

You will leave the tree line behind, entering the high, arid, and wind-scoured trans-Himalayan zone. The trail winds through sprawling yak pastures, passing the ancient, Tibetan-style villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal if you take the scenic upper route. You will walk past massive, intricately carved mani walls and ancient Buddhist chortens.

6

Acclimatization Day in Manang

Because you have gained altitude rapidly via the jeep ride and the trek, today is a mandatory active rest day. To prepare your lungs for Tilicho Lake, you must adhere to the "climb high, sleep low" rule. You have the option to take a short, steep hike up to the viewpoint above the Gangapurna Glacier, or tackle the much longer, punishing ascent toward the Ice Lake (~4,800m).

7

Trek Manang to Tilicho Base Camp (4,450m)

You will leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail today, veering west into the Khangsar Valley. The environment becomes noticeably harsher and more desolate. After passing the traditional village of Khangsar and Shree Kharka, the trail narrows dramatically. You will navigate the infamous "landslide area"—a massive, steep scree slope of loose rock and gravel that plunges directly down into the river below.

8

Tilicho Lake Day Hike (4,919m) & Return to Manang

The absolute physical crux of the expedition. You will wake before dawn and begin a grueling, lung-busting ascent up the switchbacks of the lateral moraine. The air is suffocatingly thin, and the temperature is often sub-zero. Cresting the final ridge, you are rewarded with the staggering sight of Tilicho Lake (4,919m), its vast turquoise waters stretching out beneath the sheer, icy face of the Grande Barriere. After celebrating your massive achievement, you face an incredibly long retreat all the way back to Manang.

9

Extra Rest Day in Manang

After yesterday's massive 8-to-9-hour extreme-altitude marathon, your body requires dedicated recovery. Today is a full rest day in Manang. You can sleep in, enjoy fresh pastries from the local high-altitude bakeries, visit the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic, or simply sit in the sun and admire the Annapurna massif.

10

Drive Manang to Besisahar

Your foot journey is officially over. You will board a rugged 4x4 jeep in Manang to begin your rapid plunge out of the high alpine. Retracing the treacherous, cliff-hugging dirt tracks, you will descend thousands of meters in a single day. You will watch the environment transform in reverse, shifting from arid tundra back to pine, and finally down into the humid, subtropical jungle.

11

Drive Besisahar to Kathmandu

You will board your vehicle for the paved drive back to the capital. Following the winding rivers out of the middle hills, you will watch the mountains recede into the distance. Arriving back in Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel for a desperately needed, luxurious hot shower.

12

Departure from Kathmandu

Your epic 12-day high-altitude journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the elite accomplishment of reaching one of the highest lakes on Earth.
