Stand at the foot of the world's 8th highest mountain (8,163m) without crossing Larkya La. 16-day out-and-back expedition through the Nubri Valley to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m).
The Manaslu Base Camp trek is a profound, out-and-back wilderness journey designed for trekkers who want to stand at the foot of the world's eighth-highest mountain without the extreme logistical commitment of the full circuit or the Larkya La pass. Over 16 days, you will carve your way up the steep, plunging gorge of the Budi Gandaki river. You will transition from sweltering sub-tropical jungles into the deep, ancient Buddhist culture of the Nubri Valley, passing through traditional stone-flagged villages like Namrung, Lho, and Samagaon. The physical climax of your expedition requires a massive, grueling day-hike up the glacial moraine, passing through the high-altitude outpost of Samdo, to reach the expedition tents of Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m). Standing directly beneath the chaotic seracs and the towering, twin-peaked summit of Mount Manaslu (8,163m), you will experience the raw, terrifying scale of the high Himalayas before retracing your steps back down the valley to civilization.
Your monumental Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to a comprehensive expedition briefing with your lead trekking guide. Because you are entering a strictly monitored border zone, we will finalize your complex Restricted Area Permits tonight. You will also run through a thorough gear check to ensure your layers are dialed in for the freezing alpine winds of the upper valley.
You will board a rugged 4x4 jeep early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive is a visceral adventure, taking you along the paved Prithvi Highway before veering off-road at Dhading or Gorkha. The road becomes incredibly bumpy, dusty, and dramatic as it hugs the steep, plunging cliffs of the Budi Gandaki river gorge. By late afternoon, you will arrive at the bustling, low-altitude settlement of Machha Khola, where the air is warm, thick, and highly humid.
Your foot journey officially begins today. You will trek through the narrow, sweltering gorge, navigating rocky trails that undulate constantly. You will cross several long suspension bridges over the raging Budi Gandaki and pass the natural hot springs at Tatopani. Climbing a steep, well-crafted stone staircase, you will eventually arrive at Jagat, a beautifully paved village that serves as the official entry checkpoint and gateway for the restricted conservation area.
You will continue up the main trail through Salleri and Philim, walking through dense, sub-tropical forests of pine and bamboo. The trail weaves along the gorge walls with waterfalls cascading from cliffs above. You will navigate constant, undulating climbs and descents, crossing the river multiple times on soaring suspension bridges, until you reach the tiny Gurung settlement of Deng.
The valley begins to steepen dramatically as you enter the Nubri region, an area heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. The trail weaves through dense forests of fir and rhododendron. You will climb a long, beautifully constructed stone staircase that forces you to dig deep into your stamina reserves, finally emerging at the stone-flagged streets of Namrung. Here, you will be rewarded with your first spectacular views of Siring, Ganesh Himal, and Mt. Himal Chuli.
You will notice the architecture and culture become exclusively Tibetan as you push higher. Trekking past sprawling barley fields and ancient mani walls, you will ascend through the village of Lihi and the beautiful settlement of Sho. As you make the final push into the sprawling village of Lho, the clouds will often part to reveal a staggering, impossibly close view of the twin peaks of Mount Manaslu dominating the skyline directly above the local Ribung Gompa.
The walk today is relatively short but visually mind-bending. You will trek through a mystical, moss-draped pine forest, dropping down to a stream before climbing onto a high plateau leading to Syala village. From here, you are completely surrounded by high peaks: Himal Chuli and Peak 29 to the left, Manaslu and massive glaciers straight ahead, and other snow-capped giants to the right.
Leaving the wooden houses of Syala, you will make a short, easy trek along the valley floor. The tree line begins to vanish entirely, replaced by harsh, beautiful, and wind-scoured alpine tundra. You will arrive early in the day at Samagaon, the largest and most important village in the region, set directly beneath the towering east face of Manaslu. You will spend the next three nights here.
To prepare your body for the extreme altitude of Base Camp, today is a vital active rest day. You will embark on a highly scenic acclimatization hike to the turquoise, glacier-fed waters of Birendra Lake, which sits directly at the foot of the Manaslu glacier. Pushing your elevation up toward the lake and returning to Samagaon to sleep ensures your lungs are primed for tomorrow's massive effort.
The absolute physical crux of your expedition. You will wake at dawn for a grueling, all-day push. You will trek up the valley toward the high-altitude Tibetan refugee settlement of Samdo before veering sharply upward. The climb up the lateral moraine is steep, exhausting, and oxygen-deprived. As you finally crest the ridge and arrive at Manaslu Base Camp (~4,800m), you will stand among the expedition tents of climbers attempting the 8,000m summit. The terrifying, chaotic seracs of the glacier tower directly above you. After absorbing the magnitude of the eighth-highest mountain on Earth, you face a massive, knee-jarring descent all the way back down to Samagaon to sleep.
Your retreat from the extreme altitude begins today. Because going downhill demands much less cardiovascular effort, you will cover a massive amount of ground. Retracing your steps back down the valley, you will pass through Syala and Lho, rapidly losing elevation. The sudden return of thick, oxygen-rich air and the fragrant pine forests will provide you with a huge surge of physical energy as you settle back into Namrung.
You will continue your rapid descent, plunging back into the dense, forested gorge. Navigating the familiar stone staircases and dropping out of the alpine zone entirely, the air becomes warmer and heavily oxygenated. You will cross the suspension bridges over the Budi Gandaki, arriving at the village of Deng by mid-afternoon.
Prepare for a long, sweaty final day on the trail. You will lose significant elevation, navigating the undulating, rocky paths along the river. The air becomes intensely hot and humid as you plunge back into the subtropical zone, passing Jagat and the hot springs. Crossing the final suspension bridges, you will arrive back at the road-head in Machha Khola. Your trekking boots finally come off!
You will board your rugged jeep early in the morning for the bumpy, winding drive out of the Budi Gandaki gorge. As you transition onto the paved highway, you will watch the massive snow-capped peaks recede into the distance. Arriving back in the sensory overload of Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel for a desperately needed, luxurious hot shower.
Because your massive expedition ran perfectly on schedule, you now get to enjoy a full, unrestricted rest day in the capital. You can spend the day exploring the ancient stupas of Swayambhunath or Boudhanath, shopping for souvenirs in Thamel, and enjoying a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team to celebrate your success.
Your epic 16-day out-and-back journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the elite accomplishment of standing at the foot of Mount Manaslu.
