A spectacular 18-day hybrid expedition balancing deep cultural immersion with high-altitude wilderness survival. Cross the towering Numa La (5,190m) and Baga La (5,070m) passes, explore ancient Bon monasteries, and witness the blinding turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake.
The Lower Dolpo Circuit is a spectacular 18-day hybrid expedition that perfectly balances deep cultural immersion with high-altitude wilderness survival. Utilizing basic teahouses for the lower valleys, you will follow the steep gorges of the Tarap Chu river into the trans-Himalayan plateau, arriving at the ancient trading hub of Dho Tarap. From here, the teahouses vanish, and your crew will transition into a fully self-sufficient wilderness camping operation. You will tackle a grueling, back-to-back alpine gauntlet: crossing the towering Numa La (5,190m) and Baga La (5,070m) passes over two consecutive days. Surviving the high-altitude desert, you will descend back into the tree line, emerging at the blinding turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake. After exploring the 900-year-old Bon monasteries of Ringmo, you will follow the roaring Suli Gad gorge back to civilization, completing one of the most visually diverse loops in the Himalayas.
Route Type: High-Altitude Hybrid (Teahouse + Wilderness Camping) Traverse
Difficulty: Strenuous (Requires excellent endurance, altitude acclimatization, and comfort with basic camping)
Maximum Altitude: 5,190m / 17,027 ft (Numa La Pass)
Accommodation: Local Lodges / Teahouses, with 2 nights of mandatory wilderness tented camping (Numa La BC & Pelung Tang)
Permit Requirements: Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit, TIMS Card
Insurance Requirement: Mandatory. Comprehensive travel insurance explicitly covering high-altitude helicopter rescue and emergency medical evacuation up to 6,000m is strictly required.
Your adventure begins in the vibrant capital of Nepal. Following a warm airport welcome and hotel transfer, your evening is dedicated to a rigorous gear check. Because this route involves two nights of high-altitude wilderness camping, your lead guide will verify your sub-zero sleeping bags and alpine layers.
You will take a short, 1-hour domestic flight down to the humid, subtropical plains of the Terai region. Nepalgunj is the historic gateway for goods moving between the lowlands and the high Himalayas, serving as your staging ground for the wild far-west.
A thrilling 35-minute mountain flight brings you to the tiny airstrip of Juphal. Meeting your porter and mule team, you will walk a short, descending trail through terraced fields to the banks of the Thuli Bheri River, arriving at the administrative hub of Dunai to check into your first lodge.
The expedition pushes east along the deep gorges of the Barbung Khola. The trail is carved directly into the cliff sides, winding through ancient pine forests and passing terraced fields before reaching Tarakot, an old fortress town (Dzong) that historically guarded the trading routes.
Hiking high above the roaring river, you pivot sharply north into the Tarap Chu gorge. The physical landscape violently changes as you navigate steep switchbacks carved directly out of sheer rock walls. You will arrive at the natural rock-shelter of Laini Odar, utilized for centuries by traders and herders.
You are now walking the perilous river gorge route featured in Eric Valli's Oscar-nominated film Himalaya. The gorge is incredibly narrow here, and the tree line vanishes entirely into alpine scrub. You will cross the river on swaying wooden bridges before reaching the high-altitude pastures of Ghyamgar.
Breaking out of the claustrophobic canyon, the landscape miraculously opens into a sweeping, U-shaped glacial valley. You arrive at Dho Tarap, the cultural hub of Lower Dolpo. The locals here wear traditional homespun Tibetan clothing and trade primarily in yak products and salt.
A profound day of spiritual exploration and crucial physical recovery. Dho Tarap is a geographical melting pot of two faiths. You will visit the ancient Ribo Bhumpa Gompa (Buddhist) and the Shipchaur Gompa (Bon), preparing your lungs for the massive 5,000m barrier ahead.
Leaving the teahouses and permanent settlements behind, your expedition transitions to wilderness survival. You will trek westward up the Tokyu valley, the terrain turning stark and rocky. Your crew will pitch your tents in the freezing, wind-scoured basin of Numa La Base Camp for your first night under the canvas.
The absolute physical climax of the circuit. Waking before dawn, you will tackle a grueling, oxygen-deprived slog up the steep scree to summit Numa La (5,190m). The pass rewards you with staggering views of Mount Dhaulagiri. A massive, knee-jarring descent drops you into the rocky ravine of Pelung Tang for your second and final night of wilderness camping.
Completing the legendary twin-pass gauntlet of Lower Dolpo. Climbing out of Pelung Tang, you will summit the Baga La pass, gazing out at the Kanjirowa massif. Plunging down the far side, the arid desert violently transitions back into lush alpine vegetation. You will arrive at the beautiful, grazing pastures of Dajok Tang, returning to the comfort of teahouse lodging.
A spectacular day of descent. Walking through incredibly dense, ancient pine forests, the blinding, surreal turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake suddenly appear through the trees. You will arrive at the picturesque, mud-plastered village of Ringmo, settling into your lodge right on the lakeshore.
A deeply rewarding day dedicated to the ancient Bon religion and the stunning natural landscape. You will explore the mud-plastered chortens of Ringmo, hiking up the ridge to explore the magnificent Tshowa Gompa, a 900-year-old sanctuary overlooking the deepest lake in Nepal.
Your exit back to civilization begins. Plunging rapidly down the roaring Suli Gad gorge, the sudden return of thick, oxygen-rich air and dense pine, oak, and juniper forests provides a massive surge of physical energy as you march into Chhepka.
Your final day on foot. You will hike the undulating trails through the subtropical forests, pushing past Dunai and making the final climb back up to the airstrip at Juphal. Your trekking boots finally come off, and you will share a celebratory farewell dinner with your guide and porter team.
You will catch the early morning mountain flight back to the sweltering heat of Nepalgunj, immediately connecting to a flight back to the capital. Arriving in the sensory overload of Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel for a desperately needed hot shower.
Because flights in and out of the Juphal airstrip are highly dependent on clear mountain weather, this buffer day is a critical safety net. If you are perfectly on schedule, you get a full day to relax, get a massage, and hunt for souvenirs in Thamel.
Your spectacular 18-day expedition into the heart of Lower Dolpo comes to an end. You will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with one of the most dynamic Himalayan trekking achievements under your belt.
