A 20-day trans-Himalayan pilgrimage into the most sacred spiritual epicenter of Upper Dolpo. Features the legendary 11th-century Shey Gompa, a full-day Kora (circumambulation) around the quartz-laced Crystal Mountain, and visits to cliffside meditation caves chronicled in Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard".
The Crystal Mountain Kora Expedition is a 20-day trans-Himalayan pilgrimage into the most sacred, untouched spiritual epicenter of Upper Dolpo. Moving far beyond a standard physical trek, this self-sufficient wilderness camping journey follows the ancient footsteps of pilgrims seeking enlightenment and the purification of karma. Ascending the roaring Suli Gad gorge, you will first immerse yourself in the pre-Buddhist, animistic Bon heritage of Ringmo village and the turquoise depths of Phoksundo Lake. Leaving the teahouse trails behind, you will push deep into the Phoksundo Khola wilderness, crossing the massive Kang La Pass (5,350m) to breach the hidden valley of Inner Dolpo. Here lies your ultimate destination: the legendary 11th-century Shey Gompa. You will spend three days in this sacred sanctuary, culminating in a full-day, high-altitude Kora (circumambulation) around the quartz-laced Crystal Mountain---visiting the cliffside Tsakhang Gompa and walking the exact meditation paths chronicled by Peter Matthiessen in The Snow Leopard---before making your profound return to the modern world.
Your spiritual journey begins in the bustling capital. Following an airport welcome and hotel transfer, your evening is dedicated to an absolute, rigorous gear check. Because this route involves severe high-altitude wilderness camping, your lead guide will verify your sub-zero sleeping bags and alpine layers, while briefing you on the deep religious protocols for the monasteries ahead.
You will take a short domestic flight down to the humid, subtropical plains of the Terai region. Nepalgunj is the historic staging ground for the wild far-west. You will spend the night here in a local hotel.
A thrilling 35-minute mountain flight brings you to the tiny airstrip of Juphal. Meeting your expedition crew, Sherpas, and pack mules, you will walk a short trail through terraced fields to the administrative hub of Dunai to establish your first camp.
Leaving Dunai, you officially enter Shey Phoksundo National Park. The trail plunges into a steep, heavily forested gorge. You will trek through dense canopies of pine, fir, and walnut, crossing roaring suspension bridges before arriving at the clearing of Chhepka.
Continuing up the narrow gorge, the lush forests begin to thin out into alpine scrub. You will pass cascading streams, arriving at Jharana to camp under the sound of nearby waterfalls.
A steep climb brings you to a high ridge offering a viewpoint of the massive Phoksundo Waterfall. Descending through birch forests, the blinding, surreal turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake suddenly appear. You will arrive at the picturesque, mud-plastered village of Ringmo and set up camp right on the lakeshore.
A deeply rewarding day dedicated to physical acclimatization and exploring the ancient, pre-Buddhist Bon religion. You will explore the mud-plastered chortens of Ringmo (where swastikas face counter-clockwise) and hike up the ridge to the magnificent 900-year-old Tshowa Gompa overlooking the deepest lake in Nepal.
You leave the main trails completely behind, navigating the terrifyingly narrow "Demon's Trail" pinned to the cliffs above the lake. Veering north into Inner Dolpo, you plunge into the absolute wilderness of the Phoksundo Khola valley, establishing a true wilderness camp surrounded by towering alpine peaks.
The environment turns completely hostile as you ascend higher into the alpine zone. Navigating rocky moraines and steep, wind-swept terrain, you will arrive at the freezing, desolate basin of Kang La Base Camp. You will eat a heavy dinner and prepare your mind for the brutal alpine start.
The gateway to the sacred valley. Waking hours before dawn, you will tackle a grueling, oxygen-deprived slog up steep snowfields to summit the 5,350m Kang La. A massive, knee-jarring descent drops you directly into the spiritual epicenter of the region: the 11th-century Shey Gompa, sitting silently beneath the imposing Crystal Mountain.
A day of profound spiritual absorption and physical recovery. Founded by the Tibetan Lama Tenpe Gyaltsen, this Kagyupa monastery is the crown jewel of Upper Dolpo. You will spend the day exploring the red-painted monastery walls, interacting with the resident monks, viewing centuries-old thangkas, and preparing your body for tomorrow's pilgrimage.
The absolute spiritual climax of the expedition. You will join the centuries-old tradition of the Kora---a full-day circumambulation of Riboche (Crystal Mountain). According to Buddhist belief, walking this quartz-laced route washes away accumulated karma and sins. The demanding trail takes you high into the barren ridges to visit Tsakhang Gompa, a spectacularly isolated monastery clinging to a sheer red cliff where ascetic lamas historically engaged in years of solitary meditation. You will complete the great circle and return to your camp at Shey Gompa profoundly changed.
Bidding farewell to the sacred Crystal Mountain, you retrace your steps toward the great geographical divide. You will hike back up the narrow, dramatic rock gorge, eventually setting up your tents in the bleak, wind-swept bowl of Kang La High Camp to brace for the cold.
You must conquer the 5,350m Kang La a second time to escape Inner Dolpo. Pushing over the summit, you leave the spiritual highlands behind, executing a massive descent back into the deep wilderness of the Phoksundo Khola valley.
Following the river south, you navigate the rugged northern shores and carefully cross the cliffside trails to return to the blinding turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake. You will set up camp at Ringmo village, celebrating your successful return from the high country.
Your exit back to civilization begins in earnest. Plunging rapidly down the roaring Suli Gad gorge, the sudden return of thick, oxygen-rich air and dense pine forests provides a massive surge of physical energy as you march into Chhepka.
Your final day on foot. You will hike the undulating trails through the subtropical forests, pushing past Dunai and making the final climb back up to the airstrip at Juphal. Your trekking boots finally come off, and you will share a massive farewell dinner with your incredibly tough camping crew.
You will catch the early morning mountain flight back to the sweltering heat of Nepalgunj, immediately connecting to a flight back to the capital. Arriving in the sensory overload of Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel for a desperately needed, luxurious hot shower.
Because this expedition relies on clear weather for flights into Juphal and involves two crossings of a 5,300m pass, this buffer day is a critical safety net. If you are perfectly on schedule, you have a full day to relax, get a massage, and explore the ancient stupas of the Kathmandu Valley.
The journey officially concludes today. Our team will coordinate your transfer to the international terminal to match your outbound flight schedule. As you lift off over the Kathmandu Valley, you carry with you not just photographs, but the profound silence of the Crystal Mountain and the enduring spirit of the Dolpo-pa.
Note: Deep Dolpo expeditions require immense logistical flexibility. Unpredictable snow on the passes or flight cancellations at Juphal airstrip can force itinerary changes. A minimum of 2-3 buffer days is highly recommended.
