Elite trans-Himalayan mountaineering expedition bridging the isolated Rolwaling Valley with the Everest region. Cross the treacherous Tashi Lapcha Pass (~5,755m) and stand at Everest Base Camp.
This is not merely a trek; it is an elite, trans-Himalayan mountaineering expedition that bridges two of Nepal's most legendary regions. Over 24 days, you will journey from the deeply isolated, culturally pristine Rolwaling Valley---often called the "hidden valley"---directly into the bustling heart of the Everest (Khumbu) region. You will ascend through dense, sub-tropical gorges, acclimatizing in the ancient Sherpa villages of Beding and Na before standing at the shores of the breathtaking Tsho Rolpa glacial lake. The ultimate crux of your survival and success relies on crossing the treacherous, technical Tashi Lapcha Pass (approx. 5,755m). Navigating sheer ice, glaciers, and rockfall zones, you will cross the high-altitude divide and descend into Thame. Merging onto the classic Everest trail, you will then push forward to stand triumphantly at Everest Base Camp before making your final descent to Lukla.
Your extreme Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to a critical expedition briefing with your lead climbing guide. You will undergo a rigorous check of your technical mountaineering hardware (crampons, harness, ice axe) and sub-zero camping gear to ensure you are completely prepared for the icy isolation of the pass.
You will board a rugged 4x4 jeep early in the morning, leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind. The long, winding drive takes you eastward through the hills of Dolakha and Charikot. Dropping down to Singati, you will follow the Tama Koshi river deep into the gorge, arriving at the tiny road-head outpost of Chetchet to rest by the roaring water.
Your foot journey officially begins today. Immediately leaving the road, you will cross a suspension bridge over the Tamakoshi River and tackle a relentless, sweat-drenched climb up steep stone staircases. Navigating the humid, subtropical forest, you will finally break out into the terraced agricultural fields of Simigaun, a beautiful Sherpa settlement perched high on the hillside.
You will plunge directly into the dense, silent forests of the Rolwaling gorge. The trail undulates constantly, weaving through thick bamboo and rhododendron groves. Trekking for hours with the Rolwaling Khola roaring violently beside you, you will eventually arrive at the deeply shaded, riverside clearing of Dongang to rest for the night.
As you push higher, the dense jungle gradually thins out, completely transforming into a classic sub-alpine environment. The steep gorge walls begin to open up, offering your first dramatic vistas of the snow-capped peaks ahead, including the sacred Gauri Shankar. By mid-afternoon, you will arrive at Beding, the largest and most historically significant Sherpa climbing village in the valley.
To ensure your body adapts smoothly to the thinning oxygen, today is a mandatory active rest day. You will take a short, steep hike up the rocky ridges flanking the village, giving your lungs a taste of higher altitude before returning to sleep low. You will spend the afternoon exploring the ancient Buddhist monastery and hydrating.
You are now entering the true high-alpine zone. The walk today is relatively short but visually spectacular as you trek along the right bank of the Rolwaling River. The tree line vanishes entirely, replaced by expansive, windswept grazing pastures. You will arrive at the summer settlement of Na, a sprawling village situated on a flat plain directly beneath a towering amphitheater of glaciated peaks.
A massive acclimatization and exploration day. You will ascend the valley floor and climb the massive, rocky terminal moraine of the Rolwaling Glacier. Reaching the crest, the landscape drops away to reveal Tsho Rolpa---a massive, brilliantly turquoise glacial lake. After taking in the staggering, icy faces reflecting in the water, you will descend back to Na to sleep.
You leave all traces of civilization behind today. The trail becomes increasingly rugged as you navigate the rocky moraines alongside the Trakarding Glacier. The environment is harsh, cold, and utterly isolated. You will arrive at the remote wilderness camp of Kabung, setting up your tents on the rocky glacier edge.
The air is exceptionally thin, making every step deeply fatiguing. You will hike across the chaotic, boulder-strewn Drolambau Glacier, surrounded by terrifyingly sheer ice walls. You will establish Base Camp in a freezing, wind-battered rocky bowl directly beneath the pass. You will eat early and try to sleep, preparing for the massive alpine start tomorrow.
The absolute physical and technical crux of your expedition. You will wake hours before dawn. Wearing crampons and often roped to your guide, you will navigate steep snow slopes, icy headwalls, and rockfall zones. Reaching the narrow, freezing summit of Tashi Lapcha (approx. 5,755m), you officially cross from Rolwaling into the Khumbu region. After celebrating your massive achievement, you face a long, knee-jarring descent down the glacier, eventually reaching the safety of the alpine pastures at Thyangbo Kharka.
Your retreat from the extreme altitude of the pass continues. You will walk down the stunning Bhote Koshi valley, enjoying the immediate physical relief of thicker, oxygen-rich air. You will arrive in the ancient, beautiful Sherpa village of Thame, re-entering the world of teahouse luxury, hot meals, and comfortable beds.
You will merge onto the classic trails of the Everest region today. Walking a beautifully contoured, undulating path high above the river, you will pass through fragrant pine forests and small stupas before dropping into the vibrant, bustling, horseshoe-shaped Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. Here, you can celebrate your successful pass crossing with fresh bakeries and hot coffee.
You now begin your push toward Everest. Leaving Namche on a highly scenic trail, you will drop down to the river at Phunki Tenga before facing a steep, sweaty 2-hour ascent through dense rhododendron forests. Reaching the top, you will arrive at Tengboche, home to the famous Buddhist monastery, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Ama Dablam.
Dropping through birch forests, you will cross the Imja Khola river. As you climb higher, the tree line vanishes once again, replaced by stark alpine scrub. The trail opens up into the sprawling Imja Valley, bringing you to the stone-walled settlement of Dingboche, situated directly beneath the towering peak of Lhotse.
You will trek along the valley floor to Thukla before tackling the steep Thukla Pass. At the top, you will walk through the moving memorial ground dedicated to fallen climbers. Following the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, you will arrive at the freezing, wind-battered outpost of Lobuche.
The second major milestone of your expedition. You will navigate the rocky moraine to reach Gorakshep. After dropping your heavy gear, you will push forward along the edge of the ice to stand at Everest Base Camp, directly beneath the terrifying Khumbu Icefall. (Optional: Highly energetic trekkers may opt to climb Kala Patthar at 5,545m for sunset views of Everest). You will return to Gorakshep to sleep.
Your final retreat from the extreme altitude begins today. (If you skipped it yesterday, you may climb Kala Patthar before dawn). You will pack your bags and make a massive, oxygen-rich plunge all the way down the valley, bypassing Lobuche and arriving in the warmer, windy village of Pheriche.
You will retrace your steps back down the valley, losing thousands of feet of elevation. The vibrant green tree line will provide you with an incredible surge of physical energy. You will pass back through Tengboche before arriving in Namche Bazaar for your final night in the high Khumbu.
You will hike your final, long miles today. Dropping steeply down the Namche hill, you will cross the suspension bridges one last time and wind through the familiar pine forests. Re-entering Lukla, your trekking boots finally come off! You will celebrate the success of your epic expedition with your guide and porter team.
This is your vital built-in safety net, accounting for any weather delays experienced on the Tashi Lapcha pass or extra acclimatization days needed. If you are on schedule, you enjoy a full rest day in Lukla, exploring the cafes and watching the aircraft navigate the thrilling runway.
You will board a Twin Otter aircraft for the thrilling flight off the side of the mountain. Leaving the Himalayas behind, you will return to Kathmandu, transferring to your hotel for your first long, luxurious hot shower in over three weeks.
A final contingency day for Lukla flight delays. Assuming you are back in the city, you now get to enjoy a full rest day to recover, explore the ancient temples of Kathmandu, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy a massive farewell dinner with your climbing team.
Your epic 24-day trans-Himalayan journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home as one of the elite few to have successfully traversed the Tashi Lapcha Pass.
