Tsho Rolpa Trek

Deeply immersive journey into the remote and culturally pristine Rolwaling Valley. Stand at the shores of Tsho Rolpa (4,580m) - one of the largest and most breathtaking turquoise glacial lakes in the Himalayas.

Description

The Tsho Rolpa trek is a deeply immersive journey into the remote and culturally pristine Rolwaling Valley, a hidden gem nestled between the Everest and Langtang regions. Over 14 days, you will escape the crowded commercial trails and trek through the heavily protected Gaurishankar Conservation Area. Your expedition traces the roaring Tamakoshi and Rolwaling rivers, ascending from lush, sub-tropical valleys and terraced hillsides up through dense, silent forests of rhododendron and pine. Entering the high alpine zone, you will pass through the traditional Sherpa climbing villages of Beding and Na. The absolute climax of your journey is a spectacular hike up the terminal moraine to stand at the shores of Tsho Rolpa (4,580m)---one of the largest and most breathtaking turquoise glacial lakes in the Himalayas, completely surrounded by imposing, ice-fluted 6,000-meter peaks.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300 m / 4,265 ft)

Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive gear check, finalize your GCAP permits, and ensure you are completely prepared for the rugged trail ahead.

2

Kathmandu to Chetchet (Drive) (~1,525 m / 5,003 ft) | 7-8 hrs

You will board a rugged 4x4 jeep early in the morning, leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind. The long, winding drive takes you eastward through the picturesque hills of Dolakha and the bustling market town of Charikot. You will eventually drop down to Singati and follow the Tama Koshi river deep into the gorge, arriving at the tiny roadhead outpost of Chetchet, where you will spend your first night listening to the roaring river.

3

Chetchet to Simigaun (~2,000 m / 6,562 ft) | 6-7 hrs

Your foot journey officially begins today. Immediately leaving the roadhead, you will cross a long suspension bridge over the Tamakoshi River and tackle a grueling, relentless climb up steep stone staircases. Sweating through the humid, subtropical forest, your physical effort is rewarded as the trail levels out into the terraced agricultural fields of Simigaun, a beautiful Sherpa settlement perched high on the hillside.

4

Simigaun to Dongang (~2,790 m / 9,154 ft) | 6-7 hrs

You will leave the open terraces behind and plunge directly into the dense, silent forests of the Rolwaling gorge. The trail undulates constantly, weaving through thick bamboo and rhododendron groves---prime habitat for elusive wildlife. You will trek for 6 to 7 hours with the Rolwaling Khola roaring violently beside you, crossing several wooden bridges before arriving at the tiny, deeply shaded riverside clearing of Dongang to rest for the night.

5

Dongang to Beding (~3,570 m / 11,712 ft) | 5-6 hrs

As you push higher up the valley today, the dense jungle gradually thins out, completely transforming into a classic sub-alpine environment of pine and juniper. The steep gorge walls finally begin to open up, offering you your first dramatic vistas of the snow-capped peaks ahead, including the sacred mountain Gauri Shankar. By mid-afternoon, you will arrive at Beding, the largest and most important Sherpa settlement in the Rolwaling Valley.

6

Acclimatization Day at Beding (~3,570 m / 11,712 ft) | Short hikes

To ensure your body adapts smoothly to the thinning oxygen, today is a mandatory active rest day. You will take a short, steep hike up the rocky ridges flanking the village, giving your lungs a taste of higher altitude before returning to sleep low. You will spend the afternoon exploring the ancient Buddhist monastery in the village and chatting with the locals, many of whom are legendary Everest summiteers.

7

Beding to Na (~4,180 m / 13,714 ft) | 4-5 hrs

You are now entering the true high-alpine zone. The walk today is relatively short but visually spectacular as you trek along the right bank of the Rolwaling River. The tree line vanishes entirely, replaced by expansive, windswept grazing pastures. You will arrive at the summer settlement of Na, a sprawling village situated on a flat plain directly beneath a towering amphitheater of glaciated peaks.

8

Na to Tsho Rolpa Lake (Round Trip) (4,580 m / 15,023 ft) | 6-7 hrs

The absolute climax of your expedition. You will wake early and ascend the valley floor, eventually climbing the massive, rocky terminal moraine of the Rolwaling Glacier. Reaching the crest of the moraine at 4,580m, the landscape drops away to reveal Tsho Rolpa---a massive, brilliantly turquoise glacial lake. You will spend time taking in the staggering, icy faces of Kang Karpo and the surrounding peaks reflecting in the water before making the triumphant, descending trek back to Na for the night.

9

Na to Dongang (~2,790 m / 9,154 ft) | 6-7 hrs

Your retreat from the extreme altitude begins. Retracing your steps back down the valley, you will pass through Beding and re-enter the tree line. As you drop nearly 1,400 meters in elevation, the return of thick, oxygen-rich air and the vibrant green forests will provide you with an incredible surge of physical energy and warmth as you settle back into the quiet riverside camp at Dongang.

10

Dongang to Simigaun (~2,000 m / 6,562 ft) | 6-7 hrs

You will continue your descent, plunging back into the dense, humid gorge. Walking back through the lush bamboo forests, you will navigate the undulating rocky trails, eventually climbing back up to the beautiful, terraced hillside of Simigaun to enjoy a warmer evening and a celebratory dinner in the teahouse.

11

Simigaun to Chetchet (~1,525 m / 5,003 ft) | 6-7 hrs

You will face your final miles on the trail today. The route consists of a massive, knee-jarring descent down the steep stone staircases back to the Tamakoshi river. After crossing the suspension bridge one last time, you will step back onto the dirt road at Chetchet. Your trekking boots finally come off, marking the official end of your foot journey.

12

Chetchet to Kathmandu (Drive) (1,300 m / 4,265 ft) | 7-8 hrs

You will board your 4x4 jeep early in the morning for the long, bumpy drive out of the gorge. Winding your way back up through Charikot and the Dolakha hills, you will watch the Himalayas recede into the distance. Returning to the sensory overload of Kathmandu, you will check into your hotel for your first long, luxurious hot shower in nearly two weeks.

13

Leisure / Sightseeing in Kathmandu (1,300 m / 4,265 ft)

Because your expedition ran perfectly on schedule, you now get to enjoy a full rest day in the capital. You can spend the day exploring the ancient stupas of Swayambhunath or Boudhanath, shopping for souvenirs in the bustling streets of Thamel, and enjoying a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team to celebrate your success.

14
