Explore the "Hidden Valley of Happiness" near the Tibetan border. Experience ancient Tsumba culture, visit Mu Gompa (3,700m), and trek through the sacred Ahimsa zone where all life is protected.
The Tsum Valley—often referred to as the "Hidden Valley of Happiness"—is a deeply isolated, mystical sanctuary situated against the Tibetan border. Historically restricted until 2008, this 16-day expedition transports you centuries back in time into a world untouched by modern commercialism.
You will diverge from the famous Manaslu Circuit, trekking through a strictly enforced "Ahimsa" (non-violence) zone where hunting and animal slaughter are completely forbidden. The trail ascends from lush, subtropical river gorges into the arid, high-altitude Tibetan plateau.
You will walk among the indigenous Tsumba people, spinning ancient prayer wheels, exploring profound Buddhist heritage sites like Milarepa's Cave (Piren Phu), and sleeping in the shadow of the spectacular Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal ranges. Reaching the remote outposts of Mu Gompa and Gumba Lungdang, you will experience an authentic, raw Himalayan pilgrimage that few outsiders ever witness.
Your expedition begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to a comprehensive briefing with your lead trekking guide. Because Tsum Valley requires strict Restricted Area Permits, we will finalize all necessary government paperwork tonight.
You will board a rugged 4x4 jeep early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive is an adventure in itself, taking you along the paved Prithvi Highway before veering off-road at Dhading or Gorkha. The road becomes incredibly bumpy and dusty as it hugs the steep cliffs of the Budi Gandaki river gorge.
Your foot journey officially begins today. You will trek through the narrow, sweltering gorge, navigating rocky trails that undulate constantly. You will cross several long suspension bridges over the raging Budi Gandaki, passing natural hot springs at Tatopani. Climbing a steep, well-crafted stone staircase, you will eventually arrive at Jagat, the official entry checkpoint for the Manaslu Conservation Area.
You will continue up the main Manaslu trail through Salleri and Philim, walking through dense, sub-tropical forests of pine and bamboo. Shortly after Ekle Bhatti, the trail splits. You will officially leave the busy Manaslu Circuit behind, veering eastward into the narrow, intimidating gorge of the Shiar Khola.
The trail today is challenging, involving a steep, knee-jarring descent down to the river followed by a massive, sweat-drenched climb up the opposite canyon wall. As you gain elevation, you are rewarded with your first jaw-dropping, unobstructed views of the Shringi Himal (7,187m). You will arrive in Chumling, a beautiful village featuring traditional Tibetan-style stone houses and ancient mani walls.
As you push higher, the steep, narrow gorge miraculously opens up into a massive, wide, and relatively flat U-shaped valley. You have officially entered "Upper Tsum." The agricultural terraces here are expansive, growing barley, maize, and potatoes. The air thins noticeably as you cross the 3,000-meter mark.
To ensure your safety in the thinning oxygen, today is a mandatory active rest day. You will spend the day exploring the incredibly preserved local culture. You can hike across the wide valley to visit the Rachen Gompa, a massive, revered nunnery painted with intricate Buddhist murals.
You will trek further north, moving closer to the Tibetan border. The tree line vanishes entirely, replaced by the stark, arid, and beautiful high-altitude plateau. You will walk past traditional chortens and massive mani walls, passing the last permanent settlements of Nile and Chhule. A final, steep ascent brings you to Mu Gompa, the highest and most remote monastery in the Tsum Valley.
You will wake up to the sound of monks chanting in the freezing high-altitude air. Today is dedicated to exploring this extreme, mystical environment. You can embark on a spectacular hike further up the valley toward the Tibetan border passes (like Ngula Dhojyang at over 5,000m) or visit the ancient Dephyudonma Gompa.
Your retreat from the extreme altitude begins. You will bid farewell to the monks and retrace your steps back down the arid valley. The descent is much faster and easier on the lungs. You will arrive at the village of Nile in the early afternoon.
This is one of the most culturally significant days of the expedition. Descending further, you will branch off the main trail to visit Piren Phu (Milarepa's Cave). This incredibly sacred site is where the legendary 11th-century Tibetan Buddhist yogi, Milarepa, is believed to have meditated. After exploring the cave, you will tackle a steep climb to reach Gumba Lungdang, a remote nunnery offering the best view of the Ganesh Himal range.
You will wake early to watch the sunrise illuminate the Ganesh Himal in brilliant gold before beginning a massive descent. You will drop back down through the dense pine and rhododendron forests, rejoining the main Shiar Khola trail.
You will bid farewell to the Tsum Valley today. Descending rapidly, you will pass back through Lokpa and drop all the way down into the deep, sweltering gorge of the Budi Gandaki river, merging back onto the main Manaslu Circuit trail.
Prepare for a long, grueling final day on the trail. You will lose over 700 meters in elevation, navigating the undulating, rocky paths along the river. The air becomes intensely hot and humid as you descend into the subtropical zone.
You will board your rugged jeep early in the morning for the bumpy, winding drive out of the Budi Gandaki gorge. As you transition onto the paved highway, you will watch the massive snow-capped peaks recede into the distance.
Your epic 16-day journey into the Hidden Valley comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey.
