Explore the forbidden Kingdom of Lo on this 15-day 4WD overland adventure. Drive through ancient Tibetan landscapes, visit Lo Manthang, sky caves, and experience authentic Himalayan culture without strenuous trekking.
The Upper Mustang 4WD Trip is a visceral, off-road overland journey into one of the most perfectly preserved bastions of ancient Tibetan culture remaining on Earth. Hidden behind the colossal rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, this 15-day adventure utilizes rugged 4x4 jeeps to transport you deep into an arid, wind-scoured, high-altitude desert. You will drive along the historic salt trade routes, navigating a lunar-like landscape of deeply fluted canyons and blood-red cliffs. Instead of exhausting yourself with relentless daily trekking, you will use your energy for targeted, highly rewarding short hikes—exploring mysterious sky caves carved into sheer rock walls and visiting cliffside monasteries. Your journey climaxes as you drive through the gates of Lo Manthang, the legendary walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo. Here, you will spend days deeply immersed in 15th-century Buddhist heritage before beginning your spectacular off-road descent back through the deepest river gorge on the planet.
Your spectacular Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead guide. Because you are entering a strictly monitored border zone, we will finalize your premium Restricted Area Permits tonight. You will also run through a thorough gear check to ensure you have dust protection and warm layers for the high-altitude jeep rides.
You will leave the bustling capital behind and transition to the gateway of the Annapurnas. Whether you opt for a short, highly scenic domestic flight past the Manaslu range or the winding, picturesque drive along the Prithvi Highway, you will arrive in the lush, subtropical paradise of Pokhara. You will check into your lakeside hotel, spending the afternoon relaxing by the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake.
You will board a Twin Otter aircraft early in the morning for one of the most spectacular mountain flights on Earth. The plane flies directly through the Kali Gandaki gorge, soaring terrifyingly close to the ice-capped peaks of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. Touching down on the wind-swept tarmac of Jomsom, you instantly leave the green tropics behind. You will meet your dedicated 4WD jeep and driver, checking into your lodge to feel the immediate chill of the high-altitude air.
Because you flew directly to 2,700 meters, today is a vital active acclimatization day. You will take short, easy walks around the arid, rocky riverbanks of the Kali Gandaki, searching for ancient Shaligram (ammonite) fossils. You will step out for brief hikes to nearby Thakali villages and local viewpoints, allowing your lungs to adapt to the thinner air while experiencing the notorious, howling afternoon winds that rip through the gorge.
You will board your 4WD for a bumpy, stunning drive up the steep switchbacks to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath (~3,800m). Stepping out of the vehicle, you will take a short hike up to the temple complex to visit the eternal flame and the 108 holy water spouts. After absorbing the spiritual energy, your jeep will navigate back down to the valley floor, dropping you at Kagbeni. This medieval-feeling oasis town is characterized by tight, tunnel-like alleyways and mud-brick houses. It serves as the heavily guarded, official entry gate to the restricted region of Upper Mustang.
Your restricted overland journey officially begins. After presenting your permits, your jeep will cross the invisible line into the Kingdom of Lo. You will drive up the eastern bank of the Kali Gandaki, navigating a dirt track carved into wind-sculpted canyons of ochre, red, and grey. You will make frequent stops to step out, stretch your legs, and photograph the surreal landscape. Arriving in the ancient capital of Tsarang, you will take a short hike to explore the massive, red-painted gompa and the ruins of the old five-story royal palace.
A momentous day on the rugged road. Your 4x4 will descend into a canyon, cross a river, and begin a steady, dramatic ascent up the dusty tracks. As you drive over the wind-swept pass of Lo La (3,950m), you will step out of the jeep for a spectacular short hike to the viewpoint. Below you lies the legendary, white-washed walled city of Lo Manthang sitting perfectly isolated on the plateau. You will drive down into the valley and cross the threshold of the city gates.
You have the entire day to leave the jeep behind and walk the labyrinthine alleys of the walled city. You will visit the towering, 15th-century Jhampa Gompa, featuring a massive, seated statue of Maitreya and exquisite mandala murals. You will explore the Thupchen and Chode Gompas on foot, interact with the local Loba people in the courtyards, and view the exterior of the King's Palace.
Your 4WD will take you on short drives just outside the city walls today. You will be dropped off to take highly rewarding, brief hikes up the surrounding ridges, offering sweeping, panoramic views looking out across the Tibetan plateau. You will drive to isolated, highly revered chortens and smaller monastic settlements scattered across the arid hillsides.
You will board the jeep for a mind-bending overland excursion to some of Mustang's most mysterious archaeological sites. Driving up the Chhoser valley, you will stop to take a steep, thrilling hike up into the Jhong Cave—a massive, multi-story complex of human-carved sky caves set high into the sheer cliff walls. You will also drive toward Dhakmar, stepping out to photograph the violently blood-red cliffs, which local legend claims were stained by the blood of an ancient demon.
Your retreat from the capital begins. Rather than taking the direct highway, your driver will navigate a spectacular, alternative off-road track through the remote village of Marang. You will make multiple stops for short, scenic walks past ancient mani walls and through deeply traditional farming hamlets, enjoying incredible cultural interactions with locals before settling back into Tsarang for the night.
You will face a long, visually dramatic day of off-road driving. Losing significant elevation, the jeep will drop back down through the harsh, wind-scoured canyons. You will stop for a rewarding hike up to the impossibly perched Chungsi Cave monastery. Continuing the drive beneath towering, fluted rock spires, you will cross the Kali Gandaki riverbed and arrive at the picturesque, cliff-side settlement of Chhusang.
Your final day in the restricted zone. You will drive out of the upper valley, passing back through the checkpoint at Kagbeni. From here, you will navigate the dusty, rocky riverbed in the comfort of your 4x4, shielded from the brutal afternoon headwinds that typically batter trekkers in this gorge. You will arrive back at the bustling hub of Jomsom to celebrate the success of your epic overland trip with a hot shower and a hearty Thakali dinner.
You will board your early morning flight (weather permitting), soaring back through the terrifyingly narrow gorge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Touching down in Pokhara, the sudden rush of thick, warm, oxygen-rich air will feel incredibly rejuvenating. You will transfer to your lakeside hotel, spending the rest of the day at your absolute leisure to recover from the bumpy roads, get a massage, and enjoy the greenery.
You will make the final journey back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, depending on your international flight schedule, you may have a few hours to grab last-minute souvenirs in Thamel. You will then be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the elite accomplishment of exploring the forbidden Kingdom of Lo by 4WD.
